Special notes

Western note(s).
For many reasons, in regard to juridic concerns that are common to both branches of Catholic Christianity, Western canon law is usually more detailed, and is almost always more extensively commented upon, than is Eastern canon law. Thus it behooves those researching issues in Eastern law to be aware of when Western canon law has treated the same or a similar issues in order to draw upon—always with due regard for CCEO 2—what are likely to be additional canonical insights from Western law. The degrees of similarity that might exist between provisions of Eastern and those of Western are ranked herein as follows:
The phrase "virtually identical" indicates an almost identical, sometimes verbatim, correspondence between Eastern canon(s) and Western, with any differences being minor (e.g., grammar, punctuation, word order, etc.). The phrase "substantially the same" indicates that Eastern provisions carry the same import as do the Western but they might be presented differently, say, in more or less detail (e.g., an 'introductory' canon in one Code might not be present in the other). Researchers of Eastern law should be attentive to how materials in Western law designated herein as "virtually identical" or as "substantially the same" are understood and applied.
The phrase "treats the same matters", indicates a correspondence between Eastern law and Western in regard to topic, but not in regard to treatment and, although similarities might exist, so will important differences. Consultation with Western law in regard to these provisions is less useful and perhaps offers Eastern researchers insights largely by way of contrast.
Finally the phrase "unique to Eastern law" indicates that no useful parallels exist between Eastern and Western canon law on that topic, itself a fact that could save Eastern researchers perusing Western law for insights that do not exist.
Western notes are offered at the outset of each block of canons where feasible, by individual canon when practical, or are omitted when correlations by individual researchers seems more useful.
Eastern references.
Many documents written with Western canon law uppermost in mind nevertheless reference Eastern canon law. =

Comment: Canonistics has long distinguished, if mostly as an academic exercise, between "private" law impacting persons in a society and "public" law impacting institutions in a society. With marginally more consequence canon law further distinguishes between "internal" public law impacting canonical structures within the Church and "external" public law impacting legal relations between the Church and civil entities, chiefly States, leaving one to suggest that 'internal private law' seems concerned with realm of morality and conscience while 'external private law' governs observable conduct and behavior. Canon 1 speaks primarily to the internal public law and the external private law of the Eastern Churches.

impacting institutions in a society. With marginally more
consequence canon law further distinguishes between "internal" public
law impacting canonical structures within the Church and "external"
public law impacting legal relations between the Church and civil

Comment: Canonical norms governing marriage procedures have undergone two very significant, post-promulgation developments: first, the PCLT instruction Dignitas connubii (2005) which impacted the application of the original Johanno-Pauline canons despite the odd manner in which it was published; and second, Francis' motu proprio Mitis Iudex (2015) which not only modified the content of various canons but also, unfortunately, re-numbered them and, finally, added norm-like matters using a genre not known in law. These two developments are treated separately herein.
