Tips for students and/or parents.
Language acquisition is overwhelmingly correlated with frequency of exposure to the language.
Every learner's abilities and circumstances vary but, as a rule, I think the following approach achieves the best results in the shortest time:
Formal study should take place in a setting suitable for uninterrupted focus, of course, but short reviews are best done in random locations despite (and perhaps even because of!) distractions. After all, language is designed to be used anywhere, anytime and not just in a classroom. |
|
|
Hand-held flash cards are still the best way to learn and review declensions and conjugations. When learning these important forms students should always carry the current card with them so as to be able to pull it out and quickly consult it anywhere, anytime.
One good way to form the habit of incorporating Latin practice into the day is to use a timer (e.g., a cell phone or, my personal favorite, an hour glass) set to a convenient interval (say, an hour) and, upon noticing the competition of the interval, stop whatever one is doing, recite the current paradigm once or twice, reset the timer, and return to one's other activities. This simple approach makes exposure to Latin short but frequent throughout the day, and frequency of exposure is the key to language learning. |

Overview |
Approaching Latin as a living language does not rule out memorizing some of its components and expressions in order to acquire the language more quickly and use it more fluidly. Some materials listed here are easy to learn while others will require weeks or months but all of them contribute to (and some are essential for) facility with Latin. These materials are not necessarily listed in their order of acquisition but rather simply by topic or subject area. Not every student will be concerned with everything listed on this page. Students or their parents can monitor progress for themselves, of course, or I can track it with them. |
